Filipino professional boxer Manny Paquiao says he has retired from professional boxing after knocking down Timothy Bradley twice on his way to a unanimous 12-round decision in their welterweight showdown.

Paquiao land a deft punch to send Bradley to the Canvass

The 37-year-old returned about a year after he lost the biggest money fight to Floyd Mayweather Jr. as he defeated Bradley for a second time in the rubber match between the two fighters.

Paquiao who was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives at 32 has been told he may have to reconsider his plans to retire and devote his full time to politics.

Pacquiao (58-6-2) knocked down Bradley (33-2-1) in the seventh round, though Bradley seemed to have slipped. He left no doubt in the ninth with a big left hand that sent Bradley sprawling.

All ringside judges scored the fight 116-110 with Associated Press having 117-110.

After the bout, the boxing star disclosed that he is now retired and wants to focus fully on politics.

“As of now I am retired,” Pacquiao said. “I am going to go home and think about it but I want to be with my family. I want to serve the people.”

Bradley immediately pointed out that Pacquiao is still very strong, adding that the Filipino was very calm during the fight.

“Manny was strong the entire fight and he was also very patient,” Bradley said.

“I wasn’t professional enough to stay patient myself and I walked into shots.”

“He was very quick, very explosive.” Ringside punching stats showed Pacquiao landing 122 of 439 punches to 99 of 302 for Bradley.

Meanwhile, British boxer Anthony Olufemi Joshua, born to Nigerian parents took less than five minutes to win the IBF heavyweight title.

The Briton in just his 16th professional fight defeated American Charles Martin to become his country’s sixth bona fide heavyweight world champion.

Joshua is also just the third man to win a pro heavyweight world title while still a reigning Olympic champion.
